Server Related Terms
Listed below are simplified explanations of common words, abbreviations and jargon surrounding Virtual and Dedicated Servers and some other terms you may come across on our website.
- Access provider
- An access provider is the remote computer system to which you connect your personal computer in order to connect to the Internet.
- Address (Web)
- Unique identifier of a web page. this is also known as a URL (Uniformed Resource Locator).
- Anchor
- An anchor is an HTML tag that marks a specific point in an HTML document as either the source or destination of a hypertext link. This can be used to jump from one part of a webpage to another.
- Bandwidth
- Bandwidth is the amount of data that can be transferred over the network in a fixed amount of time. On the Net, it is usually expressed in bits per second (bps) or in higher units like Mbps (millions of bits per second).
- Domain Name System (DNS)
- The most basic use of DNS is to translate domain names (e.g. www.serverchoice.com) to IP addresses (e.g. 83.244.130.12) this allows machines to identify each other on a network. In very simple terms it is similar to a phone book which maps a persons name to a telephone number. For more information see the DNS FAQ
- Download Speed
- This is the maximum speed of your connection. This is how fast you will be able to download from the Internet.
- FTP (FTP Client)
- This is short for File Transfer Protocol. It is the protocol for defining how to download and upload files between a client and a server. There are many FTP Clients available on the internet for download which deal with this process.
- GigaByte (GB)
- 1024 Megabytes
- IMAP
- Stands for Internet Message Access Protocol. This method allows a client email program to access remote messages stored on a mail server without them being removed.
- IP (IP address)
- This is an abbreviation for Internet Protocol. It is the main protocol used on the Internet. An IP address is a unique identifier given to all devices that connct to the internet.
- Monthly Traffic
- The monthly limit of data being passed to and from the server.
- POP (POP3)
- This stands for Post Office Protocol. This protocol allows you to retrieve e-mail from a remote server over an Internet connection all messages are downloaded from the server they are situated on and can then be manipulated on a client machine.
- Plesk Control Panel
- Plesk is a system provided with your Virtual Private Server that will allow you to manage your account with greater ease.
- SMTP
- Simple Mail Transfer Protocol. This is a very popular protocol used to transfer email messages across the Internet.
- URL
- Unique identifier of a web page. this is also as the web address.
- Virtuozzo
- Software installed on our servers to better manage resources
- VPS
- Virtual Private Server. A web server that is administered by a customer as though it were a single dedicated server.
